Migration Guide

Exporting from 1Password

  1. Open the 1Password desktop app (not the browser extension)
  2. Go to FileExport → select your vault
  3. Choose CSV format for maximum compatibility, or 1PUX format for richer data
  4. Enter your master password to confirm
  5. Save the export file securely

Important: The CSV export is unencrypted plain text. Delete it immediately after importing.

Importing into Vaultwarden

  1. Log in to your Vaultwarden web vault
  2. Navigate to ToolsImport Data
  3. Select 1Password (1pux) or 1Password (csv) as the format
  4. Upload the file

What You Give Up

  • Watchtower. 1Password’s integrated breach monitoring and password health scoring. Vaultwarden has built-in vault health reports for weak/reused passwords, but no external breach checking. Use Have I Been Pwned and its notification service.
  • Travel Mode. 1Password can temporarily hide vaults when crossing borders. No self-hosted equivalent exists. Workaround: create a separate “travel” vault and remove the others from your device manually.

FAQ

Is self-hosted password management as secure as 1Password?

For the encryption itself, yes — Vaultwarden uses AES-256 with Argon2 key derivation, comparable to 1Password’s approach. The difference is operational security: 1Password has a dedicated security team, bug bounty program, and infrastructure redundancy. Can I migrate my 2FA codes from 1Password?

Yes, if you stored TOTP seeds in 1Password. Export to CSV — the TOTP seeds will be included. Import them into Vaultwarden, which supports TOTP generation. Alternatively, move them to a dedicated 2FA app like Aegis (Android) or Raivo (iOS).

What about passkeys?

Vaultwarden supports passkeys (WebAuthn/FIDO2) for both authentication to the vault and storing passkeys for external sites. This matches 1Password’s passkey support.

Can multiple family members use it?
